Review of the last year

It’s been another busy year. I’ve given several talks with Stuart Gibbon, promoting our new book, and I’ve also spoken about my book of Yorkshire crime, Murder in Mind. One of the chapters from that, on Leeds killer (alleged) Louie Calvert, led to my working on a programme in the BBC Murder Mystery and My Family series.

I also had a happy day out in Leeds to be interviewed on my Murder in Mind on the Nick Ahad Show (Radio Leeds)

I can’t stay away from Wales, and Kate Walker and I had our usual wonderful long weekend course and retreat at the Writers’ Holiday event at Fishguard in February.

I have also given talks in other venues, notably alongside forensic scientist Angela Gallop at the Huddersfield Literature Festival in March, 2019. Last year I featured in Channel 5’s documentary, Inside Wormwood Scrubs.

I’ve had great fun this year writing a series of short essays for Dalesman magazine on the theme of Yorkshire Delight, and for the sheer pleasure of being with other writers it’s hard to beat the conference pleasures provided by the Romantic Novelists’ Association, which took place in Lancaster in July, 2019.

Plans and projects

2020 will see me concentrating mostly on fiction, although I have now completed my memoir of working as a writer in prisons, Good Sentences, and this will be in search of a publisher

I’m working again with Stuart Gibbon on the first two books in a new series for crime readers and writers. These will be Robbery and Burglary and Arrest and Detention. Both are from Straightforward Publishing.

On the crime history/true crime front, I’m researching and writing a book on Walter Rowland, who was twice condemned and the second time, was hanged.

Coming soon is Cops, Robbers and Trials from Straightforward Books. Also out later this year is in the Pen and Sword genealogy series.

Also, I have essays in Best True Crime Stories: Serial Killers and Best New True Crime Stories: Small Towns, both edited by Mitzi Szereno, from Mango Books.

My poetry collection, to be published by Smokestack, will be out at the end of this year. The title is Stretch and it is about my work as a writer in prisons.

Features and Articles

My series for The Dalesman, ‘Yorkshire Delight,’ goes on this year. I’m also writing for Country Life, Lincolnshire Life and This England, and also for the family history magazines.
